Local History of Laois

This page will showcase the Local History of Laois. Co. Laois is steeped in history stemming from the earliest settlers in the Bronze Age, settling alongside river sites, and building Ringforts which can be viewed on the Historic Map Viewer.

Through the ages, evidence of historic change can be seen in the landscape of County Laois. Castles and abbeys are scattered throughout the landscape such as the Rock of Dunamase and Aghaboe. Round towers such as the one at Timahoe show the Vikings made it to the most landlocked county of the entire island. Meanwhile, a number of landed estates reflect the changing colonial history of Ireland. The Map viewer above also shows some of the more ‘modern’ buildings and changes in the various towns of Laois.

As this website develops we hope to bring to our followers local history on the towns and villages of Laois.
